The United States declared on Monday that it would deny visas to Ugandan officials involved in enforcing a contentious anti-homosexuality law enacted in May in the East African nation. The law imposes penalties, including the death penalty, for homosexuality-related acts.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken revealed that the visa restrictions would apply to both current and former Ugandan officials, as well as their family members, if they are found to have contributed to the “suppression of marginalized or vulnerable groups.” These groups encompass various individuals such as environmental defenders, human rights advocates, journalists, LGBTQI+ individuals, and leaders of civil organizations.

Blinken’s statement stressed the importance of Uganda defending democracy and upholding human rights, emphasizing the decades-long partnership between the two countries that has been mutually beneficial.

Shortly after the law was passed, US President Joe Biden called for its immediate repeal and threatened to reduce US aid and investment in Uganda.

The anti-homosexuality law in Uganda prescribes harsh punishments, including life imprisonment or the death penalty, for those engaging in homosexual acts or supporting homosexuality. While the death penalty is part of Ugandan legislation, it hasn’t been executed for years.

A decade ago, Uganda abolished another law that imposed life imprisonment for homosexuals after international donors, including the United States, cut their financial support.

The latest visa policy, not specifying any individuals publicly, extends the restrictions imposed on Uganda due to alleged irregularities in the 2021 presidential election. Yoweri Museveni, who has bee壯陽藥 n president since 1986, secured another term in that election.

Simultaneously, Blinken also declared that the United States would reject visa applications from anyone involved in compromising the electoral process in Zimbabwe during the contentious August election. This election resulted in the reelection of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, whose party has governed the country for over 40 years.
