Mamelodi Sundowns Make History with AFL Triumph Over Wydad Casablanca

In a thrilling showdown, South 犀利士 African club Mamelodi Sundowns clinched victory in the inaugural African Football League (AFL), defeating Wydad Casablanca 2-0 in the final’s second leg held in Pretoria on Sunday.

Having faced a 2-1 loss in Morocco a week earlier, Sundowns staged an impressive comeback with goals from Peter Shalulile (45th+3rd) and Aubrey Modiba (53rd), overcoming the deficit and claiming the championship. This victory marks Sundowns’ addition to their accolades, including a CAF Supercup six years ago.

The AFL’s debut season, featuring eight of Africa’s premier clubs, showcased intense competition, culminating in Sundowns earning a substantial four million dollars (3.7 million euros) in prize money. As the African Confederation eyes expansion, plans are underway to include 24 clubs in the AFL for the 2024-2025 season.
