Breaking News: Oscar Pistorius Granted Parole After 10 Years

Double-amputee Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius has been granted parole, marking a significant development a decade after the tragic killing of his girlfriend, which sent shockwaves across the globe.

Singabakho Nxumalo, spokesperson for the Department of Corrections, confirmed that Pistorius is set to be released from prison on January 5.

Pistorius, who celebrated his 37th birthday this week, has been incarcerated since late 2014 for the killing of model Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day in 2013. He had a brief period of house arrest in 2015 during one of the many appeals in his case. Ultimately, he was convicted of murder and handed a sentence of 13 years and five months in prison.

According to South African law, serious offenders must serve at least half of their sentence to become eligible for parole—a criterion that Pistorius has fulfilled.

At the time of Steenkamp’s death, Pistorius was a celebrated figure, known as one of the world’s most revered athletes. The tragic incident unfolded when he fatally shot Steenkamp multiple times in the bathroom of his Pretoria home during the early hours, using his licensed 9mm pistol.
