Somalia: The United States Affirms Support Towards The Fight Against al-Shabaab

by admin-anb

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin stressed the need to continue the fight against Al-Shabaab in Somalia.

Lloyd Austin said there have been setbacks with the Somali military, which is sometimes assisted by US forces in Africa.

The US defense secretary visited Kenya’s capital, as part of his first trip to Africa, which began on Sunday in Djibouti.

Austin made this statement after the Somali government requested to delay the withdrawal of the African Union Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) last week, which began to gradually transfer power to the armed forces of Somalia, in the year 2023.

The United States government is currently working on a strong reconstruction plan for the specially trained Danab army, many of whom have died in operations against the Al-Shabaab group.

The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has told the United States government that he needs more support, as he is facing a difficult task to continue the pressure on Al Shabaab.
