Senegal Inaugurates UN Regional Headquarters.

President Macky Sall presided over the opening ceremony of the United Nations regional headquarters in Senegal on Thursday (Nov. 23), an event graced by the presence of Romania’s presidential couple during their official visit.

The United Nations House, situated approximately 30 kilometers from Dakar in Diamniadio, marks a significant step in the organization’s strategy to enhance collaboration among its various operational development entities, aimed at improving efficiency.

“This establishment is our contribution to fostering greater synergy among the organization’s diverse units responsible for operational development activities,” President Sall emphasized.

The new site will accommodate the 2,400 employees representing 34 UN entities currently operating in Senegal, specifically dedicated to serving West and Central Africa. The initiative received accolades from the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohamed.

“I express gratitude to President Macky Sall and the Government of Senegal for this significant initiative and visionary step,” stated Amina J. Mohamed, praising the initiative as a symbol of collaboration between Senegal and the United Nations in advancing peace, dignity, and prosperity for the Senegalese people and the entire region.

Spanning 13 hectares, the headquarters was constructed by a Senegalese private company, with the project commencing in 2019 and amounting to a total cost of $291 million.
