Senegal: AU congratulates Museveni, as Senegal’s Sall takes over chair

President Macky Sall of Senegal has taken over the chairmanship of the African Union, succeeding his DR Congo counterpart, Felix Antoine Tshisekedi.

This was during the AU’s 35th ordinary summit in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa.

In his address to the leaders on Saturday, President Sall congratulated leaders who have been elected to serve new terms of office, including President Yoweri Museveni.

Vice-President Jessica Alupo represented President Museveni at the summit.

At the opening ceremony, the leaders stated the importance of advocating for reform in the UN Security Council.

Uganda was recently elected to the membership of the committee of 10 (C10), whose co-ordinator is the President of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio.

The mandate of the C10 is to promote, defend, canvass and advocate for the legitimate aspiration of Africa for a presence at the UN Security Council.

At the sidelines of the summit, Alupo had a brief cordial meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya, Uganda’s eastern neighbour.
