In a historic feat at the Prefontaine Classic, Ethiopian athlete Gudaf Tsegay has rewritten the record books by breaking the women’s 5,000m world record.
Tsegay’s remarkable achievement eclipsed the previous record of 14:05.20, set by Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon just months earlier on June 9 in Paris. Her performance was nearly 12 seconds faster than her own personal best.
Ethiopia’s reigning 10,000m world champion completed the race in an astounding 14 minutes and 0.21 seconds, slicing almost five seconds off the previous 5,000m record. Tsegay’s outstanding performance solidified her dominance in the sport.
Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet secured the second position behind Tsegay, finishing with a time of 14:05.92, marking the third-fastest 5,000m time in history.
After her record-breaking run, the 26-year-old Tsegay expressed her determination to achieve another milestone in the future.
She vowed to aim for a sub-14-minute finish next year, demonstrating her commitment to pushin壯陽藥 g the boundaries of athletic excellence.
The Prefontaine Classic, typically held in late May, served as the culminating event of this year’s international Diamond League circuit. Each of the 32 champions crowned during the two-day meet earned a significant prize of $30,000.
This prestigious competition marked the final major international track and field event before athletes turn their attention towards preparations for the upcoming Paris Olympics next summer.
