Ghanaian visual artist Prince Gyasi takes the helm for the highly anticipated 2024 Pirelli Calendar, showcasing a remarkable lineup of cultural luminaries. In a departure from tradition, Gyasi personally curated the stars gracing the calendar, which was unveiled with the theme “Timeless.”
The selection of iconic personalities reflects Gyasi’s inspiration, rooted in childhood memories and admiration for these influential figures. Explaining his process, Gyasi noted, “It was a natural instinct, drawing inspiration from their work and the impact they had on my upbringing.”
For acclaimed actor Angela Bassett, being invited to participate was a remarkable moment intersecting her passion for art and admiration for the renowned publication. She expressed enthusiasm for the calendar being lensed by a young Black African photographer, highlighting the significance of Gyasi’s achievement as the first and youngest in this role. Bassett lauded the representation of Black excellence, resonating deeply with the values instilled by previous generations.
Joining the star-studded lineup are luminaries such as poet Amanda Gorman, supermodel Naomi Campbell, multifaceted talent Idris Elba, and musicians Tiwa Savage and Teyana Taylor. Notably, the calendar also features artist Amoako Boafo, former soccer player Marcus Desailly, and Ghanaian royalty, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, representing a diverse spectrum of influence.
The calendar’s unveiling in London welcomed a special appearance by a representative for His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, underscoring the global significance of this artistic endeavor.
Reflecting on her experience, Amanda Gorman shared her delight in collaborating with renow犀利士 ned author Margot Lee Shetterly for an image titled “The Blueprint.” She found the unique dynamic of their joint appearance refreshing and inspiring.
Director Jeymes Samuel, a close friend of Gyasi, emphasized the calendar’s impact in spotlighting diversity and excellence on a grand scale. Samuel applauded Pirelli’s bold move in featuring an African visual artist and assembling a cast of individuals of color, praising Gyasi’s artistic vision showcased in the vibrant environments captured.
