The Niger State government and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Ltd. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development of renewable energy and low-carbon projects in the north-central State.
The MoU was signed in Abuja earlier this week by Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago; Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abubakar Usman; NNPC Managing Director of New Energy, Kanayochukwu Odoe; and NNPC Executive Vice President for Gas, Power and New Energy Limited, Olalekan Ogunleye.
The “Green Economy and Energy Development Partnership” agreement will involve the development of a greenfield hydroelectric power project, mega solar parks for state institutions, home solar systems for 250,000 households and a 500-million-liter ethanol plant.
The partnership will also lead to the development of carbon sequestration projects, which includes the planting of 135 million trees by the NNPC and up to one billion trees by the government of Niger State over the next eight years.
