The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) – Nigeria’s government agency in charge of coordinating transport planning, policies and public transport – has launched a new electric train service to reduce traffic congestion within the west African country’s capital city, Lagos.
The new light rail service features two electric trains operating 54 trips daily, with plans to increase the frequency to 74 trips by the end of November.
Launched as part of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Blue Line (LRMT), the service is designed to ease traffic flow in the city, reduce emissions across the transportation industry while transforming Lagos into a smart city by 2030.
Abimbola Akinajo, Managing Director at LAMATA, stated that, “Lagos has become an exemplar for other African cities,” adding that the transport authority “followed the highest standards and internationally approved practices while building infrastructure for the LRMT Blue and Red Lines.”
