Guinea-Bissau: Those Accused of Attempted Coup d’état Tried in December

The document, signed this week by the Judge of Law, João Gomes Cá, contains the name of José Américo Bubo Na Tchutu, former Chief of Staff of the Navy, as “coordinator of the entire operation” and who, incidentally, is among those detained at the second police station in Bissau.

In all, there are 27 accused by the Public Ministry (MP), including military and civilians, but Papis Djemé, Domingos Yongana Sanhá, and Tchami Ialá, all from the navy, and Silvio Manuel Data, from the Rapid Intervention Brigade, should be tried in absentia , because, as far as we know, they are still at large.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office presents, however, as evidence for the prosecution, photographs of weapons and howitzers, corpses, vehicles used in the robbery, as well as call sheets made and received. Meanwhile, in the list of witnesses of the Attorney General’s Office, include, among other names, Tomás Djassi, current Commissioner of the National Police, Mussa Na MBatcha, Chief of Operation of the Intervention Brigade of the Ministry of the Interior, and Samuel Fernandes, Chief of Military Counter Intelligence and spokesman for the General Staff of the Armed forces.

On the 1st of February, a group of armed men attacked the Government Palace, while the meeting of the Council of Ministers was taking place under the chairmanship of the Head of State, Umaro Sissoco Embaló.

According to official data, about a dozen people died in the operation and some were wounded.
