Gabon: 1st edition of the Scrabble tournament “the young leaders challenge” in Port-Gentil

The intellectual thinking game saw the participation of more than twenty candidates passionate about numbers and letters. The objective for the organizers is to promote this widespread game throughout the world.

“We believe that Scrabble is an educational and above all intellectual game. Our vision is to promote the practice of this game, but above all, to encourage young people to embark on this kind of fun activity,” said Lionel Mezui Ngomo, promoter of the event.

The competition saw the participation of several enthusiasts from various backgrounds in the province of Ogooué-Maritime. It was based on a very simple game principle established during major international competitions. To know; the duplicate. In other words; it would be a variation of games that allows players to have the same chip draw each time.

At the end of the game, whoever has scored the most points is declared the winner. Parts of the game that extended over rounds before being approved to allow applicants to have a certification.

“For some who are not yet known internationally, this is an opportunity for them to have a license number, this tournament is in good faith, I congratulate the organization” , rejoiced Dimitri Fouafoua, president of the Ogooué-Maritime Scrabble league.

At the end of the tournament, Geoffroid Ogoula Mbourou was presented with the winner’s trophy. This is a figurine carved in Mbigou stone.

The highlight of this challenge is the participation of Moïse Ogandaga Houssad. A visually impaired player. Twenty years gone. To participate in this playful game, the youngster took all the trouble in the world to manage to memorize each box. As for the letters, he had to adapt them to Braille, thanks in particular to his old documents. It was then that token after token, he managed to stick this alphabetical language in relief on each of the letters, very exactly on the upper left corner. The objective is to be able to play with a sighted person without preventing them.

“It must be said that my mother had bought me a classic scrabble at the time in the years 2015, I saw very slightly I had time to familiarize myself with the board and the letters I improved over time c It was with the help of my little sister that I was able to do this meticulous work of inscribing a Braille letter on each letter to allow me to play”, he explained, also striving for his dream of participate in national scrabble competitions despite his disability. Above all, he hopes for state support in this direction.
