During their recent visit to East Africa, Britain’s King Charles III and Queen Camilla were hosted at an environmentally conscious villa situated in Kilifi, Kenya’s coastal county.
Positioned along the picturesque Indian Ocean, this five-bedroom villa, complete with en-suite facilities, provided an idyllic setting for the royal couple’s stay.
The villa’s standout feature, particularly appreciated by the environmentally aware King Charles, was its reliance on solar power. Notably, the entire structure, including its infinity pool, operated solely on solar energy, aligning with the royal family’s commitment to sustainable practices.
Originally constructed in 2016 by Erwine Overkamp, a Dutch designer based in Kenya, the villa was later acquired by the late Kenyan business tycoon Chris Kirubi. This ultra-modern Scandinavian-style residence spans 750 square meters, nestled within lush green surroundings and situated in the exclusive Vipingo Ridge area, a mere half-hour drive from the bustling port city of Mombasa.
Embraced by towering trees and offering a balcony that affords breathtaking views of the ridge and its captivating sunsets, the villa likely appealed to the royals due to its emphasis on security, privacy, and the embrace of nature, as per Overkamp’s insights.
Although King Charles and Queen Camilla’s stay lasted only 24 hours, the designer expressed that they thoroughly relished their visit. Overkamp shared his privilege in meeting the royal couple, highlighting the King’s admiration for the architectural blend of tradition and modernity within the villa. According to Overkamp, the Queen also expressed her delight, affirming that despite their brief stay, they found their experience immensely enjoyable.
