At least seven persons have died and dozens others injured following a stampede at the Olembe stadium in Yaounde during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 fixture between Cameroon and Comoros.
Moments before the start of the match, a stampede broke out at the East entrance of the stadium as the crowd tried to force its way inside.
The chaos thatensued immediately degenerated with several persons going unonscious and many walked over others into the stadium.
Several persons injured and unconscious were immediately transported to a nearby health facility in the Messassi neighbourhood, few kilometres from the Olembe stadium.
At the hospital, a sourc who pleaded to remain anonymous confirmed they have received eight corpses and dozens of injured persons. A document handed to journalducameroun.com provided the identities of some of the deaths and injured.
However, the Director of the health facility declined to communicate as he headed straight to the Yaounde Central Hospital alongside the State Counsel to continue assessing casualties after some injured persons were transported there.
For the moment, the government is still to communicate on the incident though the Confederation of African Football, CAF has already confirmed through a statement.
