by admin-anb

The president of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, called, this Wednesday, for the “immediate and unconditional” lifting of European Union (EU) and United States sanctions against Zimbabwe because they affect the country’s growth.

According to the statement from the organization’s secretariat, cited by Lusa, the president of the commission “once again renews the African Union’s long-standing request for the immediate and unconditional lifting of sanctions imposed against institutions and individuals of the Republic of Zimbabwe”.

The document also explains that “Moussa Faki Mahamat remains deeply concerned about the negative impact that sanctions continue to have on Zimbabwe’s socio-economic development, in the midst of the current global food and energy crisis”.

He also reaffirmed the AU’s “commitment” to supporting Zimbabwe’s “efforts” “towards the total lifting of sanctions” on the sidelines of the Anti-Sanctions Day celebrations that the Southern African Development Community (SADC) celebrates every year on October 25th from 2019.
