The African Development Bank (AfDB) announced on Thursday that it had lodged a formal complaint with the Ethiopian government subsequent to the arrest of two of its staff members in Addis Ababa the prior month.
In a released statement, the Abidjan-headquartered institution expressed concern, stating that its staff had been “illegally arrested, subjected to physical assault, and detained for an extended period by security forces without an official explanation.”
Termed a “significant diplomatic issue,” the bank underscored that it appreciated the swift response from Ethiopia’s Pri壯陽藥 me Minister, Abiy Ahmed, upon learning of the incident. Prime Minister Abiy promptly ordered their immediate release and pledged an inquiry into the events that transpired on October 31. The bank’s statement acknowledged the government’s recognition of the gravity of the situation and its commitment to investigating all involved parties, ensuring accountability and transparency.
When questioned for further details regarding the incident, an AfDB spokesperson refrained from elaborating on the specifics.
The AfDB highlighted that the Ethiopian government affirmed its commitment to uphold the rights, privileges, and diplomatic immunities of both resident AfDB staff in Ethiopia and those visiting for official duties.
The institution emphasized that its operations within Ethiopia remained unaffected by the incident.
