Global warming could be 1.5°C before 2030

The planet could reach 1.5°C of warming above pre-industrial era values before 2030 if there are no rapid reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, indicates a study released this Monday.

Published in the magazine “Nature Climate Change”, the study warns that by 2029, without reductions in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, there is a 50% chance of warming of more than 1.5°C compared to the time pre-industrial, a value that was established in the Paris Climate Agreement as a limit that should not be exceeded, as it would have harmful consequences for the planet and its inhabitants.

Conducted by researchers from the British university “Imperial College London”, the study provides an updated and exhaustive analysis of the global carbon budget, which is an estimate of the amount of CO2 emissions that can be released by keeping global warming below certain temperature limits.
