The Tigress had a dominant first half and led 41-28, but Australia closed the gap in the third quarter after going on a 19-10 run.
While the comeback looked on for Australia, Nigeria ensured they had the tie under control with an explosive 4th quarter performance.
The Tigress outran the Opals, ranked third in the world, with a 24-15
run in the 4th quarter to complete the upset and secure the victory.
Nigeria will face France on Thursday, August 1, 2024, in their second game at the Olympics.
A win will see them through to the knockout phase, while Australia will be aiming to salvage their tournament when they face Canada in their second game.
